The Legal Aid Society of Birmingham

Mission

The Legal Aid Society of Birmingham, founded in 1954 by members of the Birmingham Bar Association, provides free court-appointed legal representation to children and low-income adults who cannot afford an attorney. Operating as a nonprofit public charity, the organization exists to ensure that indigent individuals receive access to legal representation in courts where appointment is required by law. Its attorneys represent children in delinquency cases, serve as guardians ad litem in abuse and neglect matters, and represent indigent adults in municipal and specialty courts. Through its long-standing affiliation with the Birmingham Bar Association and its court-appointed structure, the Society remains committed to upholding access to justice for vulnerable populations in Jefferson County.
